Whole Lotta Hydrogen: Critical Gas Auxiliary Systems for Power Plants, by E/One Utility Systems

E/One Utility Systems a unit of Environment One Corporation (E/One) has pioneered a line of critical monitoring instruments for electric utilities to detect submicron particles in gas streams. Join Steve Kilmartin of E/One along with the host of Industry Today, to learn more about their comprehensive solutions, specifically in relation to how E/One's Hydrogen Control Panels are upgrading mature GE Hydrogen-Cooled Generators. When hydrogen purity drops, windage losses increase, operating costs increase and then power plants lose revenue and profitability. Gas purity is also a critical life safety issue, making monitoring for potentially explosive levels essential. Tune in for this important and timely interview!<div class="feedflare">

NECA-IBEW Invests in Wind Turbine Training Center to Address 27-Gigawatt Windfarm Development

The Midwest Region, which includes Iowa, Kansas, Minnesota, Missouri, North Dakota, Nebraska and South Dakota, is one of the hottest regions in the U.S. for renewable energy development with more than 30 gigawatts of renewable energy projects under development. The overwhelming majority, about 27 gigawatts or 90%, of these projects are windfarm projects. It's important to have qualified and reputable contractors lined up to implement wind tower construction projects. That's where the NECA-IBEW comes in. They have invested in training programs to improve the quality of service and jobsite safety of their journeyman and apprentice electricians with the purpose of saving owners and contractors time and money. In Omaha Nebraska, the NECA-IBEW has recently opened an Electrical Training Center, which offers a course dedicated for wind tower construction. A new wind turbine training curriculum features a training silo designed to simulate the working conditions of a wind turbine for IBEW electricians. "What the union represents is quality and workmanship. We have the best program in the world. We have a 5-year training program that is second to none." said Brian Sullivan, Executive Director of NECA Omaha Chapter on a recent ElectricTV.net (a joint program between NECA and the IBEW) video webcast.<div class="feedflare">

LED Streetlights, a Money-Saving Tool for America's Cities and Towns

When Ann Arbor, Michigan, suffered a 60% electrical budget cut, the city turned to the NECA-IBEW team to keep citizens safe while driving or walking on city sidewalks. Using workers from the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW), a contractor who is a member of the National Electrical Contractors Association (NECA) retrofitted LED light panels inside the city's existing streetlights. Energy used by each lamp was cut in half, from 120 to 56 watts. The LED lights reportedly will last five times longer than normal bulbs, producing added savings through reduced maintenance costs for Ann Arbor. Join this edition of Industry Today along with a special guest of IBEW for more on how NECA-IBEW can help you.<div class="feedflare">

NECA Contractors Show Expertise in Landfill Gas-to-Energy Projects on Electric TV

The National Electrical Contractors Association (NECA) and their partners from the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW) are "green and mean" for renewable energy projects. Nowhere is this more evident than in upstate New York where NECA contractor, O'Connell Electric (Rochester, New York) has been working on Landfill Gas-to-Energy projects since the mid-90's. With more than 30 landfill gas-to-energy projects under development in the U.S., totaling more than $600 million in future spending, landfill gas is one of growing renewable fuels in the green energy revolution. Having experienced and certified electricians on site is where NECA and IBEW can help power plant owners and developers.
Environmental Engineer: Don't Bury Carbon Dioxide, Recycle It!

Before utilities, oil and coal producers, industrial process companies, and energy agencies commit any more money to studying the underground burial of carbon-dioxide emissions, they ought to talk to Viva Cundliffe. The British Columbia-based environmental engineer has spent five years investigating and demonstrating how carbon dioxide could be recycled. "We recycle plastic, why shouldn't we recycle carbon?" she asks rhetorically in an interview. "I am demonstrating a more sustainable and carbon-negative solution that has lower costs, treats carbon as an asset, and could extend the life of coal resources by up to 10 times." Around the world, utilities, oil companies, energy agencies and industrial companies are collectively spending billions of dollars to investigate and prove various types of carbon capture and sequestration (CCS) technologies. "I am trying to signal to the industry that it's cheaper to recycle carbon than to store it," Cundliffe says. "Companies should beware of the potential liabilities of long-term contracts to bury carbon dioxide, for example we lose access to this compound and control of it." Cundliffe, President of Strategic Visionary Alternatives Limited (Kamloops, British Columbia), has held one pre-commercial demonstration of her technology at a commercial property located in south-central British Columbia. The company, which has received funding from private sources, governments and non-governmental organizations, filed a global patent application on the technology this past April. Join Viva Cundliffe, President of Strategic Visionary Alternatives Limited on this Industry Today podcast for more information on this exciting technology.<div class="feedflare">
